Conversion of a multi-storey parking garage Outremont, into retail, office space and residential condominiums
1175 Bernard street West, Outremont
Orange Prize, Save Montreal Society, 1987
Located on a commercial avenue in Outremont, this project undertook the conversion of a garage, constructed in 1924, into a multi-purpose building. Shops are provided at the street level, office space on the second and third floors, while apartments occupy the two uppermost levels. In addition, four penthouses with private terraces added on the roof continue the articulation of the existing facade. Each one is arranged on two levels, and is unique with its own panoramic view over the city.

The design derives inspiration from elements of the existing building without resorting to nostalgia. The majestic mushroom columns supporting the concrete are exposed throughout, particularly in the 8'-6" wide corridors where their rhythm punctuates the circulation, transforming the corridor into a gallery-like space.

On the exterior, new metalwork makes reference to the original decorative motifs, while at the ground floor, the use of artificial stone blocks alternated with original recuperated brick enhances the building vocabulary.
