Jinan Central Plaza, 1997

Jinan, China
Jinan, a provincial capital in China, has decided to restructure an entire neighborhood so as to create a central plaza. Conceived as a long rectangular slab, terminated on the ends by opposite poles of interest - the Cultural Centre and the Convention Centre -, the project is surrounded by green spaces on three sides, and is placed parallel to the Hucheng River. On the eastern and western sides of the plaza, bleachers recalling traditional Chinese ceremonial space lead to public spaces on top of the two buildings; a Chinese garden on the roof of the Convention Centre, and a multi-media / recreational / children’s play-ground on the roof of the Cultural Centre.
